The client wished to demolish a redundant facility on its site. This facility had never held radioactive or nuclear materials, however it was in close vicinity to two Nuclear Class 1 structures, along with a laboratory required to maintain site operations. The task was further complicated by the size of the facility, being one of the largest buildings on-site, along with the need to protect local facilities from the byproducts of demolition, such as dust, vibration and noise.
DBD began early engagement with the stakeholders from local facilities to determine how the demolition would affect both the safety and operations of the facility. By engaging the stakeholders early, we were able to include their input into the process for demolition, along with the additional safeguards that would be required, by either the facility or the demolition, in order to maintain safe operation of the nuclear facilities.
Due to their buy-in to the demolition process, each stakeholder with the power to force the project to cease work, were satisfied with the demolition process and safeguards put into place.
The ACR and MSR were accepted Right First Time by the Site Asset Change Board, Nuclear Safety Committee and Site Governance Meeting. Due to early interface with the ONR, the regulator did not request a review of the safety case, saving 4 to 6 months to the programme.
