Andrew Carlick: a profile of our Chairman
Chairman Andrew Carlick (FREng) gives an insight into his background and vision for investing in young talent for the Nuclear industry
Andrew is a successful Chairman, entrepreneur and technical expert with extensive proven experience building an international company and leading large capital programmes of technically challenging work. His leadership and interpersonal skills are extensive, demonstrated by the successful development of the Company and the achievement of demanding Client targets.

Andrew is an extremely dedicated and determined individual who places integrity and open communication at the heart of his work.
Brief biography:
I grew up in the Welsh mining valley of Merthyr Tydfil, nurturing a fascination for complex problem solving and innovation. I played rugby union for Merthyr and later my university in Cardiff, where I studied my degree course. On graduating, I joined British Nuclear Fuels (BNFL) at their nuclear site at Sellafield in Cumbria, intrigued by the chemical diversity and challenges posed by the site.

Since the start of my career, I have been privileged to gain extensive experience in the nuclear fission and fusion sectors; leading the development of unique IP associated with design and engineering, multi-criteria decision analysis and risk-focused project delivery processes. My career has allowed me to demonstrate my ability to lead my teams and surpass Client expectations.

I have a passion for investment in the next generation of talent, building relationships with schools, colleges and universities in order to give the younger generation the chance to experience the nuclear and engineering sectors. Our company, DBD, is a leading light in the development of Science, Technical, Engineering and Maths (STEM) graduates, achieving a sector leading ratio of new graduates recruited as staff personnel. My vision for the international business is to grow the indigenous workforce in those countries through the recruitment of STEM talent.

During the expansion of experience in previous roles and the international growth of DBD as a company, I have successfully developed senior relationships in the UK, US, UAE, Japan and China. I have also undertaken many reviews of major nuclear projects, both in the UK and internationally.

I am now fortunate to be Chairman of DBD delivering in 6 countries, a Board member of the Panasonic Trust, a Fellow of the Royal Academy of Engineering, an advisor to UK government and a Fellow of both the Institute of Chemical Engineers and Institute of Directors.

I am married to Marie, co-owner of DBD, and we have 4 children – our youngest is a little girl who has 3 older brothers. I have an enduring passion for Welsh rugby and my home town Merthyr Tydfil; my more recent pastimes include horse-riding, cycling, walking and skiing. Above all, I spend as much time with my family as possible.
